The Mets’ offseason starts in Las Vegas at the GM Meetings – and the two biggest questions are right in front of them: Will Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz be back in Queens?
Pete just put up one of the best seasons of his career (.272, 38 HR, 126 RBI, NL-leading 41 doubles, first Silver Slugger, played all 162) before opting out and hitting free agency again.
Edwin Díaz followed by opting out of the final years of his deal after a 1.63 ERA, 28-save All-Star season and now sits near the top of the relief market.
From Vegas, David Stearns is saying all the right things – that he’d “love” to keep Alonso and is preaching patience while laying out needs at center field, closer and starting pitching.
We’ll break down what that actually means, how Scott Boras is framing Alonso’s market as an “ideal franchise player,” and where Díaz’s camp has the odds of a return sitting around “50–50” after fresh talks.
Then we dive into the free-agent board: top-of-the-rotation arms like Framber Valdez and Dylan Cease, star bats like Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, and international names like Munetaka Murakami – plus which of them realistically fit the Mets’ payroll, timeline and roster around Juan Soto.
